Vision Research’s Camera Design Simplifies High-Speed Integration   July 7, 2010
Well-Defined Application Programming Interfaces and Software Development Kits Help Make it Easier Than Ever to Integrate a Phantom Digital High-Speed Camera Into the EVS Live Broadcast Workflow

WAYNE, N.J., July 7, 2010 – One of the world’s leading manufacturers of digital high‑speed cameras, Vision Research has 13 of its advanced Phantom® cameras deployed in South Africa where they’re being used to record the fast action of the month-long 2010 FIFA World Cup™ for ultra-slow motion replay. The value of ultra-slow motion replay and the lasting impact that it has on viewers at home is undeniable; however, integrating a digital high-speed camera into an existing workflow has typically posed a challenge for broadcasters, until now. Thanks to well-defined application programming interfaces (API) and software development kits (SDK), Vision Research is making it easier than ever for service providers to design solutions which give broadcasters the ability to effortlessly integrate a Phantom digital high-speed camera into their existing broadcast workflow.

“When it comes to complex and comprehensive broadcasts like the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the ability to streamline workflow is critical,” said Rick Robinson, divisional vice president – marketing, for Vision Research. “By making the APIs and SDKs for our Phantom cameras readily available to the industry, we’re helping foster the creation of new solutions and tools designed to help simplify the way broadcasters use Phantom digital high-speed cameras for ultra-slow motion. An example is EVS’ newly introduced Ultra-motion mode, an added feature to the company’s renowned Multicam LSM software. With Ultra-motion, EVS operators have the ability to remotely control a connected Phantom digital high-speed camera.”

A staple in nearly every major live sports broadcast event, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, EVS’ XT[2] video servers and Multicam LSM controllers have redefined the way broadcasters manage, edit and play content. Specialists in slow‑motion replay, EVS understands the important role and impact that a Phantom digital high-speed camera can have on a broadcast, and worked with Vision Research in the development of Ultra-motion to better accommodate the needs of its existing and future customers.

“Vision Research’s Phantom cameras are rapidly becoming the go-to high-speed camera of choice for the industry,” said Michael Shore, senior manager, Product/Third Party Integration for EVS. “As demand for these cameras increased, EVS anticipated the needs of our customers and developed a unique approach to help simplify the way a Phantom camera is used for live sports broadcasts. By adding Ultra-motion control to our Multicam LSM controller, we’ve minimized the hassle of having to dedicate additional manpower to operate and manage a Phantom camera and essentially allow broadcasters to slip it right in to their existing workflow. Ultra-motion enables EVS operators to treat a Phantom camera as if it was just another replay source, allowing direct control from the traditional interface provided on our LSM controllers. This represents a significant time and cost‑savings that we’ve provided to our customers.”
